Beth Chatto OBE sadly passed away on 13 May 2018 at the age of 94 at her home near Colchester.
Beth was an accomplished gardener, plantswoman and writer over a six-decade long career, winning numerous awards including 10 consecutive gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Victoria Medal of Honour, and The John Brookes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Garden Designers.
Giving back to the world was a huge part of Beth’s life. During her lifetime, she set up the Beth Chatto Education Trust, with the aim of carrying her passion for plants and nature to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The landscaping and garden design industry has immediately responded to this tragic news with their condolences and by sharing fond memories they had with Beth. Monty Don sums up her astounding career by saying: “Beth lived to a great age and enriched the lives of so many of us with her writing, teaching and incomparable garden – so let’s celebrate a life supremely well lived.”
Landscape designer and author, Matthew Wilson described Beth as: “My mentor and inspiration. Along with my dad the two most important people in my horticultural life. Rest in peace among the flowers Beth.”
She leaves behind her two daughters, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
