Mott MacDonald to restore seafront gardens in Felixstowe

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Suffolk Coastal District Council on a £2.8 million project to restore and enhance 1km of seafront gardens in Felixstowe, UK. This is a landscape architecture lead project with the consultancy providing a wide range of complimentary engineering services, including civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical and electrical, as well as CDMC, ecology and hydrology inputs. The scheme has various funding streams, primarily the Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £2.2million but also from the Local Authority Business Growth Incentive Scheme, Haven Gateway Partnership and Suffolk Coastal District Council. UK’s Garden Centre Group sold

Britain’s largest garden centre operator, The Garden Centre Group, said on Monday it had agreed to sell the business to private equity firm Terra Firma in a deal which values it at 276 million pounds ($438 million). The Garden Centre Group comprises 129 centres across England and Wales, operating under brands such as Wyevale, Blooms, Bridgmere and Country Homes and Gardens. It also has an online offer and runs the largest gardening club in Britain with over 2 million members. Andrew Sells, chairman of The Garden Centre Group, said the sale follows the decision of shareholders to realise their investment….

Ten-point plan to beat the drought

Hosepipe bans from April 5 will affect half of Britain’s gardeners. Forcasters say the outlook remains dry — but even if torrential rain falls for weeks on end, the East would still be in drought. The ban, confined mainly to Southern and Eastern England, will remain until reservoirs fill and rivers flow normally — and that’s unlikely before next winter, so we’ll just have to cope. Climatologists warn that hotter, drier summers are increasingly likely, so as well as dealing with the current drought, we need to make changes in the way we garden. So here’s my ten-point plan to…

Top dressers get noticed

The professional groundsman wants to achieve the highest standards in green and turf care. So when it comes to top dressing and spreading it makes sense to compare today’s top dressers with the traditional. It’s likely, suggest Broadwood International, that you’ll find the old style overweight and outdated when you look at the TurfEx range with its practical features, functions and thoroughly modern design. The first things you’ll notice are the non-corrosive polyethylene hoppers which are lighter in weight than steel hoppers, meaning you transport more product and less machine. You also run less risk of damaging fine turf.  The…

Wessex Proline TGX outfront flail mower

Operators of outfront power units such as John Deere, Kubota, Ransomes, Shibaura, Iseki, New Holland and others now have the ideal partner in grass cutting. The Wessex Proline TGX outfront flail mowers complement all the leading brands and make short work of long or fine grass. While a rotary will cut longer grass it will not mulch and leave the turf looking tidy like a flail. Combine this with the manoeuvrability of the outfront mower and the partnership is equally at home on a sports pitch or a roadside verge.  The TGX follows ground contours accurately with its own wheels…

IOG SALTEX

The usefulness of IOG SALTEX as the ‘one-stop shop’ for all turf and open space management matters and as a showcase for new ideas and products – plus the event’s unrivalled ability to enable equipment to be demonstrated outdoors – continue to dominate the reasons why industry decision-makers make their annual pilgrimage to the Windsor show (this year, September 4-6). According to independent research, 88 per cent of visitors to last year’s IOG SALTEX said it was important to see equipment working in a ‘real life’ environment. And more than half (59 per cent) said the show was the one…

Industry bodies raise hosepipe ban concerns to water companies

The various trade and professional bodies that represent the UK’s landscape and gardening industry have co-ordinated a unified response to the proposed temporary use bans that Thames Water announced on 13 March. The temporary use (formerly hosepipe) bans have the potential to cause enormous commercial damage to those involved in supplying and delivering landscape services. Signatories to the letter to Thames Water include the Horticultural Trades Association, the Association of Professional Landscapers, the British Association of Landscape Industries, the Landscape Institute, the Society for Garden Designers, the Turfgrass Growers Association and the Royal Horticultural Society. The joint response highlights the…
